RDBMS This presentation should be used over an entire unit to introduce all the facets involved in conceptualising, designing and implementing a relational databse. Although it gives a very clear introduction to difficult concepts such as normalisation, other resources should be used in conjunction with this resource to give students as much practical experience as possible. If and when students are producing a solution to a database problem in a piece of coursework, this presentation along with the ones on the Systems Life Cycle and DFD's work very well with each other to give the students all the tools they need to document a project correctly and ensure that they have included all that is expected of them. Many thanks to Ritchie King for kindly donating this resource. If you would like to see more examples of Ricthie's work, please click here |

RDBMS This presentation starts off by explaining the reasons why a relational database is preferable over a flat-file database. The presentation then moves on to a look at entities and relationships. It walks you through creating a basic ER diagram. It is probably the clearest explanation about this topic that I have come across to date. Kindly contributed by FatMax

Real RelationshipsAn activity to encourage students to think about the different types of database relationships. Kindly contributed by Julia Stevens |

Resolving RelationshipsThis activity provides students with a set of example relationships which are set up as 'many to many'. Their task is to try to resolve the relationships correctly and in so doing, gain a better understanding of this skill. Kindly contributed by Julia Stevens |
