Is our language changing for the better...

Did you know that ‘Word of the Year’ was ‘W00t’? A term often used by online gamers to celebrate something.

Or do you know the word ‘tweet’ that is popular with people using the networking site Twitter?

How about ‘lolcats’ (adding funny captions to pictures of cats)?

Language is always changing, but never faster than today as the Internet and mobile phones bring in new ways of saying something. This may be a good thing.

However, many people are becoming concerned that things have gone a little too far. Many teenagers are now more comfortable with ‘text speak’ than they are with writing grammatically correct English.

There are fears that if things continue as they are, we may soon have a whole new generation who are unable to communicate using the written language, as we know it today.

So what do you think?

I think it's ok to use abbreviations on chat rooms, msn, phones and stuff, but not in "real life". It doesn't make sense "2 rite lyk dis" when you are in school or if you were in a job or something. And not all teenagers write like that, it's not fair for adults to think that just because we might put "lol" we are brainless. By the way, I am thirteen.

Netspeak, to be honest the english we use today used to be slang, so i don't know what you're all talking about. 'Blud' was a Los Angeles gang. Abbreviations like Lol aren't slang its just an abbreviation. All you people who are against it, read up on some english lit and realise that the language that we speak now used to be slang.

what a load of rubbish people have been abrevating things the whole time and everything changes. in the past we had latin, german and celtic influences but today we have the technological influences and if they didn't limit how many letters you could place in a text there would not be a problem so the cause is n ot the youth of today but the phone companys of today.

I Think that youths should be able to write in online speak when it's appropiate such as online and through text but standard English during things like school. I use on an online community for my art and some words like "LOL" can be used like an international langauge because everyone from different places uses it, bringing people in one way closer (if you know what i'm gettin' at) I think that the online language is probabally goin' to get worse, however, that's the way it goes. We don't-eth speak-eth elizabethian anymore-eth. X

I think it is ok to write slang to your mates but not in exams or school work because people will not be able to understand it and it keeps chnging everyday so you will have to have learn every new word each time it changes. They all have different meanings in different areas so you would have to understand your area.

I think that it is ok to write in slang when ur writing to your friends in informal letters and on MSN and texting them. But when ur writing a formal letter to the school then u would use proper english. U should also use proper english in your school work as well.

I think that the evolution of the language is a good thing, I can still write in proper english ,however, its usually quiker 2 use txt slang when communicating using tings like phones etc. and i think that the new txt language is another step forward in technology, you will never b able 2 stop the language being changed because the technology being produced needs it to function properly, so i rly don see what the fuss is all about XD

Considering those against are using abbreviations anyway, that can be quiet. Using "txt slang" as you call it is very handy when you are playing a game,such as WOW, and dont wish to take the time from questing to write full blown sentences.

i don't think that there is any problem with it. It's not like we don't know how to speak properly plus it's quicker (icould type this in about half the time if i typed it how i usually would in otherwords slang). I find this rather amusing, as most of the people against using slang feature misspelled words or bad grammar. I cant see what the problem is. I text all the time but I can tell the difference between when I'm texting my mates and when I'm writing something for real. I think kids are bright enough to be able to keep the two apart.

I think that the english language should be kept how it was in the 16th Century when Shakespeare first captured the English vocabulary. Shekespeare was a brilliant influence on us as an English Country, so stop all of this `Wuu2` Language and start reprosenting England and talk properly like me.

I don't think that using some slang words is completelty inappopriate, however i believe that the correct use of english should be used the majority of the time. I don't believe that 'wot' or 'u' should be used, what are we teaching people that are younger than us? Even though I use 'lol' i tend to use correct grammar most of the time. English should not be completely disgraced by the incorrect grammar used today. I think many people of my age would believe differently, but surely good english will get you further in life?

I think that using text language is fine on mobiles because it costs more the longer the words are, but when you start using it in real life, thats going to far. I have read the against arguments and half of them use text language! we cant stop it, but we dont have to join in. A girl I know speaks in text language all the time. Some times in conversations she will say LOL instead of laughing.

But when you attend english classes, have english as your first language you shoulden't have a excuse. I really don't understand why people can not just talk properly. Texting is easier when slang is used. But it sounds horrible. A pet hate is no just texting/typing slang, but SPEAKING slang. Slang originates from chavs. Take a look around your school and neighbourhood. Only chavs use slang and text talk. DOES ANY BODY ELSE SEE THAT? Anyway, slang is ridiculous and is taking the mick of all of those dedicated writers, for eg, William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. I used to use 'text language' but now I use it much less. I will still use 'lol' and 'woot' for things, but never do I shorten words or phrases; I think it's lazy to write "L8r" rather than "later", or "wuu2" rather than "what are you up to?". I was most shocked when I read an English essay written by my brother (year 8) and he'd put things like "u" and "th" instead of "you" and "the". I believe it affects younger people more than it does of people my age (I'm 17) because we're mature enough to know better. As kids are using the internet more at a younger age, they are more susceptible to using that sort of language.

Well, language is changing because of those who stimulated everything. So who stimulated or started this? In my opinion I'd say technology has lead to this - it has changed our language. This is a not good thing since we are getting in a habit in writing in short forms - i.e. "lol", "lmao", "k" etc. I think people don't always use this sort of language intentionally but because they are running out of text in their mobiles. Therefore, they try to use shot forms in order to save them some text so that it can be used later. But it has become such a habit that people often end up dragging in these short forms in their exams (Yes, some people even these sort of words in an exams because these words have invaded their minds through text-messaging. Sad, really.) If mobile companies or the companies that we sign our contract with - for example T-Mobile, O2, Orange, 3 etc reduce their text-price or increase the number of texts then I think this issue would not be such a big problem. It will reduce people from using short forms and give them a chance to practise their English writing skills at last. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying increasing the number of texts will completely vanish the use of short forms but I think it will at least reduce the current rate at which people are using such short forms that are unreadable in the formal world. It is a bad thing that people use such short forms in their everyday live but still there are ways to tackle this issue. As well as thinking about tackling these issues we must in addition think about tackling it as soon as possible otherwise in year s time our language will be completely mutated. To normal English speaker it will be as if they are reading French. That is how different it will be and so we should tackle this issue by not falling on that path the wrong path of the road. I agree that teenagers are taking over our language system. i beleive they are ruining it for the rest of the generations to come. I ask myself why these children try re-write history. Language was made the way it is and should stay that way. I am a teacher and all my students agree language is a very important part of society. I get rather disconbobulated when children talk to me with silly words such as 'you bare rude miss' and 'dont chat breeze miss' i do not understand any of these phrases. language should stay the same as it always has been. Its our way of life!

Because of a surge in technology kids these days are not able to communicate in clear english. There is no problem with text as long as it doesn't form your daily written language. This is an issue the Goverment need to be addressing if they want the economy of Britain to rise. They need to look at ways of making all mobile phones have predictive texting that is easier to use so that people will use this instead of typing out the message that they require.

A lot of my learners have literacy issues which range from severe grammatical and spelling mistakes (basically use text type) to those who choose to use text type as its a faster alternative. In my opinion this text type culture in todays world is turning the youth away from wanting to write correct English which will cause them to fail and/or suffer academically. Maybe in 10 - 20 years when 70%+ of the population are unable to write correct English it may be acceptable.
